The Canton of St. Gallen launched a new project competition for the HSG campus on Monday. According to a statement from the authorities, the winning project is to be chosen next summer. The campus should be completed by 2031. This is the second attempt for the 207 million euro building on the Platztor site.

Last year, the canton requested that the winning project be revoked. In September 2023, it said that the project had lost much of its spatial and design quality compared to the 2021 competition design.

Back in 2019, the people of St. Gallen approved a 160 million franc loan for the new six-storey building. The remaining funds are to come from the federal government, the HSG itself and the City of St. Gallen.

Application window open

Interested planning teams can now apply to take part in the new architectural competition in a so-called pre-qualification process, as the canton wrote on Monday. A newly composed jury will then select 16 teams from these applications, who will then have to develop a project proposal by May 2025.

Construction will not start until 2028 at the earliest, it added. This will delay the project by around two years.
