The Glarus government has decided to permanently introduce a hospice in the Salem retirement and nursing home in Ennenda GL. Previously, a four-year trial was run there. The scientifically monitored evaluation of this pilot phase showed that the operator had built up a good quality hospice, which had an average occupancy rate of 70 percent.

For this reason, three hospice beds will now be introduced on a permanent basis, the government wrote on Thursday. The canton will contribute a lump sum of 335 francs per day of care. However, this only applies from August until the end of this year. After that, the contributions will be regulated in a service agreement.

A hospice takes in patients in their final phase of life when treatment in a hospital is no longer necessary and care at home or in a nursing home is not possible. With its own hospice, the canton of Glarus enables the population to die with dignity, the statement continued.
