Lucerne cantonal councillor Michaela Tschuor (center) and city mayor Beat Züsli (SP) kicked off the countdown to the 2025 European Women's Football Championships on Europaplatz on Thursday. They want to draw attention to the European Championships with various activities - including a mobile football pitch.

Before the big goal kick on the small football pitch on Europaplatz, Tschuor emphasized the importance of the event: "It is important to us to promote women and young girls and to focus on the importance of this sport."

It is a great honor to welcome top female footballers to Lucerne next year, said Tschuor. Three of the European Championship group matches will be played on July 5, 8 and 12 on Lucerne's Allmend. The opening match will take place in Basel on July 2.

Mayor Züsli emphasized that the federal government, cantons and municipalities have a duty to promote women's football. And not just during the European Championships, but also beyond. "We still have some homework to do."

Marion Daube, Director of Women's Football at the Swiss Football Association, said that one of her goals was to create a "football culture" that would make it easier for women and girls to take up the sport. They are currently in the process of creating as many corresponding offers as possible.

Central defender Caterina Tramezzani and goalkeeper Laura Schneider were also present at the festive launch of the European Championship. Both play for FCL and are part of the national team. At the end of the event, Schneider stood in the goal of the mobile football pitch, where the councillor, mayor and co. were able to try their luck in the penalty shoot-out.

The mobile football pitch will be on the road in Lucerne's municipalities until the start of the European Championships in July 2025. The public can also travel through the region on a themed VBL bus and access colorful NextBike rental bikes.
