The canton of Uri wants to strengthen flood protection in Erstfeld UR. It is planning to build crests or walls along the Gotthardstrasse for around CHF 3.2 million and to expand the debris collector in the Nollental valley.

The canton of Uri has invested around 170 million francs in flood protection since 2009, as announced by the Uri Department of Construction on Tuesday. Now two further measures in the area of the Nollental and Locher-/Speckital streams in Erstfleld are to ensure greater safety.

On the one hand, work is planned to enable the water to be diverted via the Gotthardstrasse relief corridor. This will involve the construction of crests or walls along the Gotthardstrasse. According to the press release, these measures will continue until the fall. In addition, measures are to be implemented at private properties by spring 2025.

The canton is planning to expand the debris collector at the Nollental stream. In future, it should protect against a 100-year debris flow event. The construction of the debris collector is planned for the winter months of 2024 and 2025.

Immediate measures and a new flood diversion in the Gotthardstrasse for events that can occur every 30 years have already been implemented in Uri.

According to the press release, the Federal Office for the Environment is contributing 45 percent of the costs of around 3.2 million Swiss francs.
