If a ship with a license plate is transferred to another body of water in Central Switzerland, it must be thoroughly cleaned and the change reported. Ship owners can complete the relevant documentation online on a new platform.

Since August 1, 2024, registered ships in Central Switzerland have been subject to a ship reporting and cleaning obligation every time they change waters. As of Wednesday, a cross-cantonal electronic reporting platform will be available on the website of Umwelt Zentralschweiz for reporting the change of waterway and proof of cleaning, according to the Lucerne State Chancellery.

A change of watercourse must be reported on the platform in advance. The boat must then be cleaned by an authorized cleaning service, the State Chancellery announced. The cleaning must also be documented on the platform.

The six cantons want to prevent the spread of alien plants and animals in bodies of water. Stricter regulations apply to certain bodies of water. The focus is on the quagga mussel, which has already infested Lakes Alpnach and Zug and can cause major damage.
