The valorization of the historic open space is exemplary of the city's efforts to further develop the open and green spaces of the Aare loop around the UNESCO World Heritage Site as inner-city recreational areas in line with garden conservation guidelines. This was announced by the Heritage Society in a press release.

The English Gardens are located on the steep, north-facing slope of the Aare opposite Bern's old town, between Kirchenfeldbrücke and Bärenpark. They are a culturally and historically valuable wooded complex with an area of around four hectares that is worthy of preservation.

The grounds date back to the 1880s and were renovated by the city in 2020/21.

The Swiss Heritage Society has been awarding the Schulthess Garden Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of garden culture since 1998.
