A second streetcar axis across Bern's Bubenbergplatz is not compatible with the plans to upgrade the square. This is the conclusion of the cityscape commission. The municipal council sees its position confirmed, as it announced on Friday.

Following test planning, it presented its "vision for the future" for the long-term development of the area around the station at the end of February. It is to become greener, offer more space for pedestrians and cyclists and increase the quality of the area.

Whether a second streetcar axis across Bubenbergplatz would be compatible with urban development was left open as part of the test planning. The cityscape commission has now investigated this question on behalf of the municipal council.

In its statement, it points out that the once attractive Bubenbergplatz has been degraded over the course of the last century from a reception area to a purely functional space. This could now be changed.

With the construction of the second station entrance, Bubenbergplatz will become the actual station square. It is therefore logical to give it a new center and align it with the historic street lines.

In order to unleash the potential, however, the pressure from traffic must be reduced. A second streetcar axis is not compatible with the objectives.

"Best option" by 2026

As we know, this is also the view of the municipal council. As part of the expediency assessment, it has spoken out in favor of routing the second streetcar axis via Bundesgasse and Kochergasse. The other two options, which run via Bubenbergplatz, are not acceptable to the council.

However, Bernmobil takes a different view. The municipal transport company would like to see the option via Bubenbergplatz and Bahnhofplatz via Speichergasse and Nägeligasse to Zytglogge.

The second streetcar axis is intended to relieve the existing route. The aim is to determine the best route by 2026.
