An electric car caught fire in Ermenswil on Wednesday afternoon. The driver was able to get out of the car in time. The cause is unclear.

A 45-year-old man was driving his car in the direction of Bauma. As he turned into Lütschbacherstrasse, he noticed the smell of smoke and parked his car at the side of the road, the St. Gallen cantonal police reported on Thursday.

The electric car caught fire immediately afterwards and burned out completely. The fire could have been caused by a technical defect in the car or by a battery from a machine tool, according to the statement.
