One day after the fire in the old town of Constance D, the fire department is still struggling with pockets of embers. According to the city administration, these can still be found on the second and third floors of the affected residential and commercial building. In addition, a company has begun safety and demolition work on the building.

The gable front of the building must be secured, as the city administration wrote in a statement on Friday. "Once the gables have been successfully secured, the buildings directly opposite in Zollernstrasse, which are currently closed for safety reasons, can be occupied again." However, the rear part of the building can no longer be saved and will have to be demolished.

The fire department was informed about the fire in the old town in the early hours of Thursday morning. 14 residents were rescued from the building, the Constance fire department wrote in a statement on Thursday evening.

Seven people were slightly injured, including five firefighters. The fire had also spread to other buildings. Firefighters from Kreuzlingen TG and Tägerwilen TG were also involved in fighting the fire.

As of Friday afternoon, the police had received no further reports of injuries, as a spokeswoman for the Constance police headquarters told the Keystone-SDA news agency. The evacuated residents were initially taken to the Konzilgebäude Konstanz.

The city is now looking for suitable accommodation for those affected. The police spokeswoman added that the amount of damage could not yet be quantified, but was certainly in the seven-figure range.
