After several back and forths, the National Council and the Council of States have reached an agreement on a capital subsidy for SBB. The National Councillors followed the small chamber and reduced the subsidy from CHF 1.15 billion to CHF 850 million on Monday.

The one-off capital subsidy is intended to help SBB cope with the consequences of the loss of revenue in long-distance transport during the coronavirus pandemic in the years 2020 to 2022. Parliament had requested this in a motion.

The National Council approved the Council of States' proposal to reduce the subsidy without discussion. Another controversial issue was a provision added to the Swiss Federal Railways Act regarding loans from the federal government to SBB. Here too, the National Council agreed with the Council of States by 117 votes to 69 and prepared the bill for the final vote.
