Following an oil spill in Péry at the beginning of September, fish in the Schüss as far as Lake Biel are currently no longer edible. The canton of Bern recommends not fishing in the affected section of the river. Due to the smell of oil, the authorities also advise against eating the fish.

The section of river above Péry is not affected. Fishing is still possible there until the closed season. The closed season for trout begins on October 1 and lasts until March 15, 2025, during which time no fishing is permitted anywhere in the Schüss, according to a press release issued by the cantonal Department of Economic Affairs, Energy and the Environment on Friday.

Before the start of the new trout season in spring 2025, an assessment will be made as to whether the fish are edible again. On September 7, a large quantity of heating oil leaked in Péry and entered the Schüss. The fire brigade set up several oil barriers.
