The canton of Fribourg is to receive an inter-institutional cantonal repository (SIC) for its cultural heritage in Givisiez in 2028. The State Council forwarded a commitment credit of CHF 56 million to the Grand Council on Thursday.

The SIC will cover the needs of the cantonal and university library for the next 40 years, as announced by the Fribourg State Council. The needs of seven other state and state-related institutions will be covered for 25 years.

Today, Fribourg's cultural heritage is scattered and in some cases poorly stored. This endangers valuable objects and makes maintaining the collections expensive, the press release continued. In total, there are around 6 million objects worth over 420 million francs.

The canton intends to save over one million francs in rental costs each year by storing the objects in the SIC. In addition, two warehouses in the La Maillarde industrial zone in Romont will be freed up and rented out.

The Fribourg electorate is expected to be able to vote on the loan for the new building in February 2025. The plan is to move the collections to the new warehouse in 2028.
