The Basel government is requesting 1.67 million Swiss francs for the first steps in spinning off the Basel criminal investigation department from the public prosecutor's office. The first step is to draw up an analysis on the basis of which criminal prosecution is to be reorganized, as the government announced on Tuesday.

The Basel government has submitted an application for 1.67 million francs to finance the first steps towards spinning off the criminal investigation department from the public prosecutor's office. Initially, a comprehensive analysis is to be carried out to serve as the basis for the reorganization of criminal prosecution, as the government announced on Tuesday.

The requested funds are made up of a supplementary credit of CHF 540,000 for the current year and further expenditure of CHF 1.13 million until the end of 2025.

The canton of Basel-Stadt is planning to give up its special position in Switzerland and integrate the criminal investigation department from the public prosecutor's office into the cantonal police force. A year ago, the Grand Council passed a motion to this effect by Pascal Messerli (SVP) to the government with a clear majority.

Basel's criminal investigation department has been part of the public prosecutor's office since 1931. This puts Basel-Stadt in a unique position in Switzerland, as the police corps mainly acts as a security police force.
