The Bern Convention Office has criticized Swiss wolf policy. The preventive shooting of wolves due to "potential damage" is a misinterpretation of the convention. Swiss organizations called for an immediate halt to the culls on Saturday.

Only serious damage could lead to wolf culls, wrote the Bern Convention office in a letter published on Friday, which was made available to the Keystone-SDA news agency. The convention ratified by Switzerland is an international treaty of the Council of Europe, which is intended to protect wild animals, among other things.

The office also expressed concern about alleged inaccurate monitoring of the damage caused by wolves and alleged manipulation of data to justify further culls, according to the report. The bureau has not made a decision and will refer the case to the standing committee in December.
