Bern Housing construction in the canton of Bern increased in 2022
In 2022, 4,400 new apartments were built in the canton of Bern. A total of almost three billion Swiss francs was invested, according to the cantonal economic office.

The 4,400 apartments corresponded to an increase of 800 apartments compared to the previous year, as the Office of Economic Affairs wrote on its website on Wednesday.
At 2,200, most of the new apartments were built in the Bern-Mittelland administrative region. At municipal level, the city of Bern recorded the largest increase with 799 new apartments. It was followed by Köniz (348) and Zollikofen (216).
In a third of Bern's municipalities, no new apartments were built at all in 2022.
In terms of population size, the administrative region of Bern-Mittelland had the highest level of residential construction activity with 5.3 new apartments per 1,000 inhabitants. The Seeland administrative region saw the least construction. Only 3.1 new apartments per 1000 inhabitants were built here.
The number of new apartments built in the canton of Bern in 2022 was well below the Swiss average. In Switzerland, an average of 5.3 new apartments were built per 1000 inhabitants. In the canton of Bern, the figure was just 3.4.
In contrast to Switzerland, the canton of Bern recorded a slight decrease in residential construction investment compared to 2021.
