The number of farms in the canton of Baselland fell slightly in 2023. However, the proportion of organic farms has increased, as reported by the Basel-Landschaft Office for Data and Statistics on Wednesday.

According to the statistics, 705 of the 874 farms in 2023 were still operated conventionally, which corresponds to 80.7 percent of all farms in the region. Because two farms have converted to organic farming, there are eight fewer conventional farms in 2023 than in the previous year.

At 19.3%, the proportion of organic farms in the Basel region exceeds the national average of 16.5%, according to the report. This development illustrates the growing trend towards organic and sustainably managed farms in the region, writes the office. Organic farming was practiced on a total of 169 farms.

The agricultural area in the canton of Basel-Landschaft amounted to 21,348 hectares in 2023 and thus remained practically unchanged compared to the previous year. The farms employed a total of 2830 people in 2023, which corresponds to a new low.
