The façade of Liebegg Castle in Gränichen AG is expected to remain unlit for seven weeks. The reason for this is the installation of more environmentally friendly lighting, as announced by the canton of Aargau on Thursday.

The current lighting no longer meets environmental protection requirements, it said. Thanks to adapted mask inserts, the LED projectors planned for Liebegg Castle will only send their light to where it can be seen, according to the State Chancellery.

The night sky and other sensitive areas will no longer be illuminated and the regulations regarding light pollution will once again be complied with. Due to the new installation, the listed castle will remain unlit from August 12. The new façade lighting is scheduled to go into operation on Friday, September 27.

Conferences, weddings and witches

Liebegg Castle has been owned by the Canton of Aargau since 1948. It is situated on a 70-metre-high rocky outcrop above the Wynental valley and has its origins in a castle complex dating back to the 12th century. It is used as a conference and cultural center and is popular for wedding celebrations. It has also been home to the Swiss Witch Museum since 2018.
