On Sunday night, a stranger knocked out a 39-year-old man in Basel, kicked him in the head and injured him. According to the police, the victim had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

The attack took place at 0.30 am on Unterer Rheinweg near the Theobald Baerwart school building. The 39-year-old was sitting with a group on the banks of the Rhine when the perpetrator suddenly approached him and attacked him, the public prosecutor's office of the canton of Basel-Stadt announced on Sunday.

After the attack, the unidentified man reportedly fled in the direction of the barracks. The search for him was initially unsuccessful.

The exact course of events and the motive for the attack were initially unclear, according to the press release. The perpetrator had a three-day beard, was wearing a blue T-shirt, blue shorts and a white baseball cap and was carrying a black shoulder bag.
