The newly built Kuppel music club in Basel is set to open on October 17, 2024 with a small three-day festival. The new dome will be completed in the coming weeks after a construction phase of over two years, the Kuppel Foundation announced on Monday.

Jean-Marc Lüthy, who was previously managing director at Nordstern Basel, will be managing director of the new dome. Simon Lutz, the initiator of the dome, is stepping down from the Board of Trustees, as the Kuppel Foundation also announced.

He will be replaced by former Basel SP councillor Sebastian Kölliker, who is now Deputy Secretary General of the Federal Department of Justice and Police under Federal Councillor Beat Jans (SP). The Board of Trustees of the Kuppel Basel is thus now made up of Emélie Dunn, Martina Duschmalé, Salome Hofer, Sebastian Kölliker and Tobit Schäfer.

The new replacement building for the Kuppel music club near the Heuwaage, which was demolished in 2016, will cost over 14 million Swiss francs, according to the press release. The new building, designed by Vécsey Schmidt Architekten, also includes eight rehearsal rooms. The Grand Council had approved a construction loan of 1.7 million Swiss francs for this. However, the actual concert venue for up to 600 visitors is entirely privately financed.
