The Aarau Cantonal Hospital (KSA) is building a radiology center at its Lenzburg AG site. According to the KSA, patients currently have to wait up to six weeks for an examination. The new center is due to open at the end of 2025.

In addition to the KSA clinics, more and more GPs and specialists are relying on the expertise of the Cantonal Hospital's Institute of Radiology. The number of outpatient imaging procedures has risen by 26 percent in the last two years, the KSA reported on Monday.

Despite process optimizations, the waiting time for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is up to six weeks. This long waiting period is not sustainable for some patients from a medical point of view, the KSA stated.

Due to the demographic development in the canton, the demand for radiological imaging will continue to increase. The KSA is already referring patients to external practices in order to shorten waiting times. This complicates and increases the cost of the treatment process.

Mammography screening program

The new radiology center, which is also easily accessible by public transport, will be equipped with two MRI scanners, a computer tomography scanner, an X-ray machine, an ultrasound scanner and a mammography machine.

In the canton of Aargau, all women between the ages of 50 and 69 have free access to breast cancer screening. In September, the Grand Council approved the necessary compulsory credit of CHF 12.4 million for a ten-year mammography screening program.
