He was also a little excited today, said Atici, who has been Director of Education since May, in front of the new first-graders at the Volta elementary school in St. Johann. "Now the adventure really begins!"

Atici said that a new journey had begun for 1,720 pupils in Basel's elementary school. That's 80 fewer first-graders than in the previous year, according to statistics published on Monday. However, the total number of pupils at primary school level increased by 240 to 10,200. In the kindergartens, the number of new admissions fell by 20, while the total number of kindergarten children rose by 30 to 3,470.
