The canton of Nidwalden is taking the vacant hotel-restaurant "Postillon" in Buochs, which it rents, into operation as refugee accommodation. The reason given is the increasing number of refugees arriving in Switzerland.

The State Chancellery announced on Wednesday that the first people would be moving into the collective accommodation in the next few days. A maximum of 60 to 80 people could be accommodated there.

The canton had rented the "Postillon" in spring 2024 for a maximum of five years in case the number of asylum applications rose sharply. This has now happened, according to the state chancellery. Despite renting an old residential building on Mettenweg in Stans, there is no longer enough capacity in the other accommodation facilities.

Nidwalden has to take in 0.5 percent of the refugees who come to Switzerland. The canton assumes that it will have to accommodate around 275 additional people this year, according to the press release.

According to the State Chancellery, Nidwalden is primarily allocated refugees from the federal government who are in a "stable living situation". However, it is becoming more difficult to provide enough places for these people without affecting the dried-up housing market. This cannot be a permanent situation, according to the press release.
