In future, every person in Switzerland should submit their own tax return and pay taxes, regardless of their marital status. In the National Council, the SP, FDP, Greens and GLP want this paradigm shift, while the SVP and the center oppose it. Nothing has been decided yet.

On Monday, the large chamber spent hours debating the FDP Women's Tax Fairness Initiative and the draft law on individual taxation. Both proposals are aimed at taxing each individual person.

The decision to accept the indirect counter-proposal is likely to be a close one. The Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation (WAK-N) passed the initiative and indirect counter-proposal by 13 votes to 12. Due to time constraints, it was unable to vote on Monday. The debate will continue on September 25.

The Federal Council wants to achieve its goal more quickly with the statutory provisions than with the constitutional article. Representatives of the SVP and the Center Party reject the initiative and counter-proposal. The SP, FDP, Greens and GLP wanted to support the indirect counter-proposal.

Today, married couples and same-sex couples living in a registered partnership are taxed jointly. If both people are gainfully employed, they sometimes have to pay higher taxes than cohabiting couples with two separate tax assessments due to progression.
