The canton of Bern has withdrawn its planning application for the conversion of a former nursing home in Biel. A collective accommodation facility for asylum seekers and refugees was to have been built in "Obere Ried".

Various objections to the building project were received, as announced by the Health, Social Affairs and Integration Directorate on Friday. Among others, the Bernese Heritage Society has objected to the interim use.

Due to the resulting delays and the correspondingly shorter period of use, the canton of Bern has now halted the project. Another reason was the unclear costs resulting from the dismantling and renovation following the interim use, according to the press release.

Up to 120 asylum seekers were to have lived temporarily in the former retirement home in Oberer Ried. The corresponding rental agreement was limited to three years.
