After nine months of construction, the park café on the Kleine Schanze in the city of Bern will reopen on July 13. Due to the weather, however, certain environmental work will have to be postponed until the second construction phase of the meeting place, as the city of Bern announced on Thursday.

"The heavy rainfall in recent months has meant that the ground work could not be carried out as planned," explained Tobias Würsch from Stadtgrün at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. This applies, for example, to the sowing of plants or the surfacing work on the pulpit. Individual green areas will therefore remain closed off. The second stage is scheduled to start in spring 2025 and last until the middle of the same year.

The majority of the eastern area of the site will now be available to the public again once the first stage has been completed, as the press release explains further. This includes the café in question: the park-side extensions have been demolished and the building has been replaced by a renovated outdoor area. The café now also includes an obstacle-free public toilet, which replaces the free-standing facility.

The green area on the Kleine Schanze has been undergoing renovation since October 2023. The municipal council has earmarked loans totaling more than seven million francs for this purpose.
