The public limited company Repower Moesano SA was founded at the beginning of September, according to the official gazette of the canton of Graubünden published on Monday. This is an administrative act, as the municipalities have not yet decided whether they want to change their energy supplier.

"The opening of the company in Grono GR is a first step towards being able to supply the Mesolcina region with energy in the future. We intend to stay for the long term and employ staff locally," said Repower asset manager Gianpaolo Lardi when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday.

Since the beginning of the year, the Graubünden-based energy supplier has been working on conquering the energy market in the southern Graubünden valleys of Misox and Calanca, which has been dominated by Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET) for almost 40 years. An initial proposal was submitted to the municipalities in June.

A contribution of six million francs in the form of non-repayable funds was on the negotiating table. These are to be valid for two years in order to reduce energy costs for end consumers. The offer also included the opening of a company in the region with new jobs, in which the municipalities would have a 30 percent stake.

Decision in the next few months

No decision has yet been made by the municipalities, confirmed Lardi, who is also a member of Repower Moesano SA. The municipalities should receive an updated offer in the coming weeks so that they can make a decision by the end of November.
