Specifically, the road surface is to be renewed and the drainage and the Rohr/Underi retaining wall repaired, as announced by the Schwyz State Chancellery on Thursday. In addition, a bicycle lane is to be created on both sides and a sidewalk is to be built on one side between the Biberegg restaurant and the Biberegg overpass.
The bus stops are also to be made accessible for the disabled, according to the statement. A retaining wall will be built along the Steineraa on the valley side and a new wildlife fence will be installed on the mountain side to guide game safely across the Swiss Southeast Railway tunnel.
The renovation is necessary because the road has been structurally damaged for some time. In addition, the road safety at the junctions and the pedestrian routing is inadequate and the bicycle routing is no longer up to date.
Construction is expected to start in summer 2025. The 2220-metre-long project perimeter is to be renovated over three and a half years. According to the State Chancellery, the road is the only efficient link between Inner and Outer Schwyz. It also connects the two national roads A4 and A3.
