  • A 79-year-old pensioner shot at construction workers from a balcony in Thalwil with an air rifle.
  • The pensioner was convicted of attempted coercion and assault.

As reported by the NZZ, a 79-year-old pensioner in Thalwil fired an air rifle at construction workers from the balcony of his apartment, hitting a worker on the buttocks. A legally binding penalty order from the Limmattal/Albis public prosecutor's office shows that the pensioner was upset about the dust from a neighboring construction site in October 2023.

Three construction workers were working on the opposite building to cover the flat roof with gravel. The pensioner wanted to stop the construction workers from doing their work in order to reduce the dust pollution and therefore grabbed an air rifle, which laymen cannot distinguish from a real gun from a distance.

Heavy penalty

The pensioner initially shouted and waved the gun around on the balcony before firing a well-aimed shot at one of the workers. The worker who was hit suffered minor swelling on his buttocks. Although the workers had been frightened, they had not allowed themselves to be deterred from their work, according to the penalty order.

The pensioner was sentenced for attempted coercion and assault to a conditional fine of 60 daily rates of 40 francs (2,400 francs) with a probation period of two years. He must also pay a fine of 300 francs and 800 francs in legal costs.
