Siblings and children living in the same household should be assigned to the same school in the city of Zurich wherever possible - to make it easier to combine family and career. This is the demand of an FDP postulate.

The city council should examine how the compatibility of family and career could be defined as an additional and mandatory allocation criterion when allocating pupils to elementary school, according to the motion published on Thursday.

Specifically, Emanuel Tschannen and Yasmine Bourgeois from the FDP are calling for siblings or children living in the same household to be allocated to the same school unit and, if possible, to the same school building.

Families and single parents with several children are dependent on simple school logistics, according to the proposal. If siblings or children living in the same household were assigned to different school buildings, this would make logistics and organization more difficult for parents or guardians. And thus also the "desired better compatibility of family and career", the postulants state.

According to the postulate, the current allocation criteria do not allow the district school presidents and head teachers to take the criterion of work-life balance into account when allocating pupils to elementary school. This is neither appropriate nor in keeping with the times.
