On the Saalhofstrasse on the Salhöhe Jura Pass near Erlinsbach AG, speed limits of 60 km/h and other measures are intended to increase road safety. Since the pass road was expanded, there has been an increase in motorcycle accidents, as the canton of Aargau announced on Thursday.

Following an accumulation of accidents and dangerous traffic situations, the cantonal police and the Department of Construction, Transport and the Environment (BVU) have taken measures to increase road safety, it said. The road is also an important access route to the Barmelweid Clinic and is used by public buses.

From next Monday, the speed limit on Saalhofstrasse up to the top of the pass will be 60 km/h and additional bend guidance arrows and signs will be installed.

New drivers and "racers"

Since the completion of the road extension in 2022, an active scene of motorcyclists has been abusing the pass road as a racing and training track, writes the BVU. Some motorcyclists challenge their personal and technical limits on the winding route, while new riders also practise cornering on their motorcycles.

In May and June, there were over a dozen accidents involving motorcycles. Just last Saturday, a 33-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with a tree. With the reduction in speed, the police will carry out even more checks than before.
