"We want to trigger a huge storm of enthusiasm for women's football," said FDP city councillor Mathias Gabathuler (Directorate of Education and Leisure) at a media conference in St. Gallen on Thursday. The European Women's Football Championship should therefore be used to expand training opportunities for grassroots sport. There is also currently a shortage of changing rooms. The situation should also be improved in this respect. It is not yet clear how much money will be spent on these measures.
In 2024, the canton of St. Gallen will support a women's coaching course with only female participants and instructors for the first time. This is another measure to promote women's football. Because: "We still don't have the same conditions for girls' football as we do for boys' football," said Bettina Surber (SP), Head of the Department of Education of the Canton of St. Gallen.
According to Céline Bradke, project manager of Host City St. Gallen, up to 200 volunteers will be on duty on match days in St. Gallen. Recruitment will begin in the fall.
Eight venues in Switzerland
The "Uefa Women's Euro 2025" will take place next year from July 2 to 27. St. Gallen is one of eight venues. The city and canton of St. Gallen have each approved a CHF 1.4 million commitment credit for the planning, organization and staging of the event.
