In 2023, the number of passengers at the three busiest stations of St. Gallen, Rapperswil and Wil increased by ten percent compared to the previous year. The same trend can be observed throughout the canton, the press release continued. "Over 86 million passengers used regional transport services in 2023."
The number of kilometers traveled per person increased by twelve percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. Around two thirds of the total of 662 million kilometers were covered by train and one third by bus. According to the canton, the level of self-financing is 56%.
According to the press release, public transport in the canton of St. Gallen should be "fossil-free" in ten years' time. The replacement of diesel buses will take place step by step and in close coordination between transport companies and the canton. The new electric buses are pioneering in terms of CO2 emissions, energy efficiency and noise.
With the timetable change in December, the service will also be further expanded. Express trains will now run every half hour through the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. Local bus services will also be expanded. In addition, the night-time rail and bus network will be redesigned and expanded.
