Following the clear "yes" to the Moutier Concordat in the cantons of Bern and Jura, the Bernese SVP is now calling for an end to the "fighting words and jibes" from the pro-Jura side. The Jura issue is now considered resolved with the change of canton from Moutier.

The SVP was the only party in the canton of Bern to reject the treaty regulating the transfer of the Bernese Jura town to the Jura. The People's Party traditionally stands behind the forces loyal to Bern in the Bernese Jura. It opposed the change of canton from Moutier.

The SVP had also criticized the agreement on the grounds that Bern would come off badly financially. With the Yes to the concordat, the departure of Moutier will now be pursued "with expensive consequences". The party regretted this, according to a press release on Sunday.

At the same time, however, it expressed its conviction that the Bernese Jura would remain an important part of the bilingual canton of Bern even without Moutier.

The SVP will "resolutely oppose" any further attempts at secession, the party writes. This is in the interests of a strong, diverse canton of Bern that can continue to fulfill its bridging function between German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland.
