The group of Geoffroy's spider monkeys left Basel Zoo for Denmark at the end of July. The zoo wants to concentrate in future on keeping one of the three spider monkey species recommended by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, as it announced on Wednesday.

The nine animals, aged between 6 months and 25 years, have found a new home at Skaerup Zoo in Denmark. The reason for keeping Geoffroy's spider monkeys is that there is no breeding program coordination for these spider monkeys in Europe.
The keeping and breeding of spider monkeys has a 50-year tradition at Basel Zoo, which will now be continued in a new form. In future, the zoo will concentrate on keeping brown spider monkeys, brown-headed spider monkeys and red-faced spider monkeys. The population of these spider monkey species is considered endangered.
