From 2026, the Klöntal valley is to be closed to motor vehicles on the last Sunday in June, July and August. The basis for this was provided by a memorial proposal from the Young Greens and Greens in the canton of Glarus, which was adopted at the Landsgemeinde 2022.

Lake Klöntal is becoming increasingly popular. On beautiful summer weekends, vehicles line up around the entire reservoir.

To ensure that the Klöntal remains attractive and is relieved of conflicts caused by motorized traffic, the Young Greens and the Greens submitted the motion "Slow Sunday in Klöntal", which originally called for at least eight car-free days. The Glarus electorate adopted a watered-down version of this in 2022.

New law needed

In order for the request to be implemented, the law needed to be amended. This will be included in the Introductory Act to the Federal Act on Road Traffic and must now be discussed again by the Glarus parliament and finally by the cantonal assembly. If everyone agrees, the three car-free Sundays can be implemented from 2026.

The driving ban will apply from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the Sundays in question. Residents, hotel guests, people going about their work, emergency services, public transport and urgent agricultural and forestry transport are exempt.
