At its meeting in Frauenfeld on Wednesday, the Thurgau cantonal parliament clearly rejected a motion to create a single cantonal health insurance fund. The SP wanted to implement such a health insurance fund with a state initiative.

The Grand Council rejected the motion with 85 no votes to 33 yes votes, as reported by Radio SRF's Regionaljournal Ostschweiz on Wednesday. The SP's request demanded that the legal basis be changed by means of a state initiative to the Federal Assembly so that cantons are given the opportunity to create a single health insurance fund.

The SP had based its motion on the fact that competition between the various health insurance companies had not led to lower premiums as hoped. Instead, the change of health insurance company by the insured caused additional administrative costs of several million francs a year. A single health insurance company would eliminate these costs and also save on administrative and advertising costs, the SP wrote in its motion.

In addition to the SP, the Greens were also in favor of the motion. A clear majority of parliament and the government were against it.
