In the city of Biel, traffic fines can now be paid online. The municipal police inspectorate launched an online portal on Monday.

With the online fine portal, fined persons can now pay traffic fines "using common digital payment methods", as the Directorate of Social Affairs and Security of the City of Biel wrote on Monday.

Previously, a payment slip was placed under the windshield wiper when a municipal parking fine was issued. Now it is a slip of paper with a QR code that refers to the online portal, the press release added.

If the person to whom the vehicle is registered did not commit the traffic offense themselves, they can use the portal to assign the person who was driving the vehicle at the time of the offense. In addition, those fined can lodge an objection to the fine online, according to the statement.

However, fines can still be paid using a payment slip. In the case of speeding and red light violations, fines will continue to be sent by post with a payment slip, the city added.

The city of Biel hopes that the introduction of the online portal will simplify administrative processes in the fines system. It also assumes that the number of unpaid fines will decrease. As a result, fewer drivers will have to be reported to the public prosecutor's office in future.
