The "Mitenand statt Gägenand" project on the main axis of the cantonal capital of Aargau is to be extended by nine months. The canton announced on Wednesday that the temporary retention of the 30 km/h traffic regime will give it time to decide on the definitive implementation.

With the 1:1 scale experiment, which officially runs until August, the city of Aarau and the canton of Aargau are gathering experience for the definitive design of the busy Bahnhofstrasse. To this end, the speed limit has been reduced from 50 to 30, traffic lights have been switched off and pedestrian crossings have been removed. A multi-purpose lane in the middle of the road facilitates crossing.
From August 21, the data collected during the one-year trial will be analyzed and evaluated, according to the Department of Construction, Transport and the Environment (BVU). The interest groups involved can also submit comments.
Until a definitive decision on the renovation and possible redesign of Bahnhofstrasse is made in 2025, the current traffic regime will remain in place, as decided by the city of Aarau and the canton.
This will prevent parts of the traffic arrangement from having to be dismantled and rebuilt later - for a definitive introduction - writes the BVU.
