New female candidates had a better chance of being elected than men in the 2024 Lucerne municipal council elections. Nevertheless, women remain underrepresented in municipal executive bodies.

Lustat Statistik Luzern provided information on Wednesday about the electoral chances in the municipal council elections. These were held in 78 municipalities on April 28 and June 9, 2024. 441 people stood for election. 62 percent were men, 38 percent were women.

235 men and 144 women were elected. The proportion of women had thus increased from 37% to 38% compared to the 2020 elections, Lustat reported.

The success rates remained unchanged compared to 2020. Of the women who stood for election, 87% were elected, while 85% of the men who stood were elected, according to the press release.

According to Lustat, one of the decisive factors in the election success was whether a candidate stood for election as an incumbent. The success rate of incumbents was 98 percent. Of the new candidates, 63 percent were elected.

While the success rate for incumbents was the same for women and men, i.e. 98 percent, it was different for new candidates. Here, women achieved a rate of 67 percent, while men only had a rate of 60 percent.

In 76 of the 78 municipalities in which elections were held, at least one seat went to a woman. In 17 municipalities, women hold a majority on the municipal council.
