The Federal Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the Zug government. The government refused to grant the online news portal "Zentralplus" access to government council minutes.

The Zug government originally rejected a request from the news portal. Based on the Public Access Act, the portal demanded access to all government council minutes from the year 2022, according to a Federal Supreme Court ruling published on Friday.

"Zentralplus" successfully challenged this decision before the Zug Administrative Court. The Zug government ultimately appealed the ruling to the Federal Supreme Court.

The court has now come to the conclusion that the Zug government council did not sufficiently explain in its appeal how it would be "significantly affected at the core of its actions" if it had to grant access to the government council minutes for 2022.

The files consist of 617 A4 pages, which according to the Zug State Chancellery would take 180 hours, as the ruling went on to say.

The editorial team of "Zentralplus" wrote on its website on Friday about the ruling: "The Zug government council must hand over the minutes of its meetings from 2022." The Public Access Act is intended to guarantee transparency regarding administrative activities and essentially declares every official document to be public.
