The winner of the competition is Zurich-based Schmidlin Architekten. The result will be "a convincing ensemble of buildings that opens up towards Hodlerstrasse and the Aare slope", as announced by the museum's management at a media conference.

The Stettler building from 1879 and the building at Hodlerstrasse 6, which the city will hand over to the museum, are to be renovated. The project envisages a free-standing replacement building for the Atelier 5 annex. Hodlerstrasse is to be upgraded.

The international project competition was launched in summer 2022. It was based on the "Future of the Kunstmuseum Bern" concept. This envisaged Bern receiving a modern art museum in an attractive setting.
