The city of Zurich was quicker than the city parliament: on Wednesday evening, the FDP and SP withdrew their postulate calling for "facilitations for boulevard gastronomy" during the World Cycling Championships. Because the demand has already been met.

In their postulate of August 21, Flurin Capaul (FDP) and Ivo Bieri (SP) had pointed out that the World Cycling Championships would be particularly difficult for restaurants due to closed roads and other restrictions.

In order to compensate for lost sales, the councillors suggested that pubs and restaurants should be allowed to set up a barbecue or a TV set in their outdoor areas without any complications.

However, the city already provides for this: In garden restaurants on private land and in boulevard cafés on public land, television sets with a maximum screen diagonal of three meters can be used to broadcast the races without a permit.

The city has also already considered a barbecue stand. It had decreed that food and drink stands could be set up on boulevard café areas along the racetracks, provided there was enough space.

Catering entrepreneurs knew nothing about it

However, Capaul said at the beginning of Wednesday's council meeting that catering entrepreneurs and representatives of the city were unaware of these regulations at a recent event. They had only found out about it after submitting their postulate.

"We don't want to use the apparatus for something that has already been initiated," said Capaul and therefore announced the withdrawal of the motion. The UCI Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships will take place from September 21 to 29.
