The Zurich FDP considers a possible donation by the city of Zurich to the controversial UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to be unconstitutional. It has therefore lodged an appeal with the district council.

At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday, FDP parliamentary group president Michael Schmid confirmed a corresponding report in the "NZZ" newspaper on Sunday.

Schmid explained that he was convinced that such a donation was an interference of the city in the foreign policy of the federal government and therefore unconstitutional. The city council could provide humanitarian aid, but not to UNRWA as a replacement for the federal funds that had been cut.

In July, the Zurich municipal parliament referred a postulate from the SP, Greens and AL to the city council. According to this, the city of Zurich is to replace donations that the federal government no longer wishes to make. It wants to reduce this from CHF 20 million to CHF 10 million.
