In the canton of Zurich, parents are apparently paying too much for their children's meals at school camps and on excursions. At least this is the conclusion reached by the price watchdog in a recently published report. Now members of the cantonal council from the Greens, CSP and AL want to know from the government what it thinks of a possible reduction in parental contributions.

According to the question published on Wednesday, the canton of Zurich has set the parental contribution at a maximum of CHF 22 per day of meals for class camps and school trips lasting several days.
However, parents may only be charged as much for meals as they save due to their children's absence, according to a 2017 federal court ruling.
According to the latest figures from the Swiss Conference for Social Welfare and the household budget survey by the Federal Statistical Office, the amount saved on meals is currently CHF 8 per day per child, the proposal states. Accordingly, the price watchdog recommends that the canton of Zurich reduce the current contributions to a maximum of CHF 8 per pupil per day of meals.
For this reason, the members of the Cantonal Council want to know from the government, among other things, what it thinks of the price watchdog's recommendation and by when a review of the maximum parental contributions will take place. And whether they see a need to review the maximum parental contributions per day of meals for special schooling away from home on the basis of the price monitor's recommendations.
