People with disabilities should be given easier access to politics in the city of Zurich: On Saturday, the municipal council referred a postulate to this effect to the city council by 93 votes to 11.

People who are under guardianship are often restricted in their political participation; they receive little practical help in exercising their political rights, the postulants from the SP, FDP and Greens justified the motion.

"Providing voting documents in plain language is not enough." Information events and concrete support in filling out the ballot papers are needed. The postulate now calls on the city council to examine how political education activities could be introduced for all people under guardianship in Zurich.

In addition to providing information about political rights and duties as well as the political system, the postulants want "active co-determination and self-determined participation in the political system to be given priority".

In the municipal council, only the SVP spoke out against the postulate. Political education is important, stated Stefan Urech (SVP). But the municipal level was the wrong level; a person from Uster should be supported in the same way as someone from Zurich. "The issue belongs at federal level."

In view of the large number of municipal votes in Zurich, Michael Schmid (FDP) replied that it was entirely appropriate for the city to make a special effort. All other parliamentary groups also spoke out in favor of the motion, citing the importance of political education and political participation.
