The former chief strategist of ex-US President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, has asked the country's Supreme Court to postpone his imprisonment in July. Bannon requested a postponement of his four-month prison sentence until the appeal against his conviction for contempt of Congress has been finally decided, according to the letter submitted to the Supreme Court by his lawyers on Friday. The lawyers argue, among other things, that Bannon is not a flight risk and that the 70-year-old poses no threat to the safety of others.

A judge ruled a few weeks ago that Bannon must begin his prison sentence on July 1. The ultra-right journalist and conspiracy theorist Bannon was convicted around two years ago for ignoring a subpoena from the Committee of Inquiry into the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and for failing to provide requested documents. Bannon presents the accusations against him as politically motivated. Trump's former economic advisor Peter Navarro began his four-month prison sentence back in March. He was also found guilty of contempt of the US Congress.

Trump's supporters stormed the seat of parliament on January 6, 2021. At the time, Congress formally confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election. Trump riled up his supporters during a speech by claiming that he had been deprived of his election victory through massive fraud. Five people died as a result of the riots. To this day, the Republican does not acknowledge his defeat against Biden. He wants to move back into the White House after the presidential election in November. A committee of the US House of Representatives investigated the Capitol storm and called on Trump confidants such as Trump and Navarro to cooperate, but they refused.
