According to state television, it is the strongest storm to hit the city since typhoon "Gloria" in 1949.

The authorities had already issued a storm warning in advance. Air and ferry services were suspended and Shanghai's 25 million inhabitants were urged not to leave their homes. The highways were also closed.

Previously, "Bebinca" had passed over Japan and the Philippines, where six people were killed by falling trees. According to state television, the storm is expected to move in a north-westerly direction and pass over the Chinese provinces of Jiangsu, Zehjiang and Anhui.
