The canton of Vaud can shoot all seven animals of the Mont Tendre wolf pack. The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has responded positively to the application submitted by the cantonal authorities in mid-August.

"The FOEN accepted the canton of Vaud's application to regulate the Mont Tendre pack on September 3, 2024," a spokeswoman told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Monday. She was confirming a report by French-speaking Swiss television station RTS.
Preventive culls can be carried out until January 31, 2025. The legal basis is the revised Swiss Hunting Act. In addition to Vaud, the cantons of Graubünden, Valais, St. Gallen and Ticino have also submitted corresponding applications to the FOEN.
Number of culls still open
However, it is still unclear whether the canton of Vaud will decide to shoot all the individuals in the pack. "We will primarily target the male responsible for most of the attacks. As soon as this goal is achieved, we will evaluate further measures," said Vassilis Venizelos (Greens), the state councillor responsible for the environment, in an interview with RTS.
This is the first time that the canton of Vaud has wanted to eradicate an entire pack of wolves. He justified his application with the "particularly high number of predators" in this pack despite the regulatory measures taken to date. Three cubs born in this pack had already been shot in 2023.
