Heavy travel traffic caused waiting times on the A2 at the Gotthard on Sunday. On the south side of the tunnel, the queues were 13 kilometers long shortly after midday. Motorists had to wait in front of the tunnel portal for over two hours.

This was reported by TCS traffic information on the short message service X. Over the course of the afternoon, the wave of northbound traffic gradually decreased again. By Sunday evening, the queue had shrunk to 5 kilometers.

On the northern side of the tunnel, the queue of cars between Amsteg UR and Göschenen UR measured eight kilometers at the beginning of the afternoon. The time lost on the southbound journey was one hour and twenty minutes. In the evening, there were still three kilometers and half an hour of waiting time.

The Gotthard route had to cope with more traffic than usual at the weekend because the route over the San Bernardino on the A13 has been closed for over a week due to storm damage. The repairs to the San Bernardino highway are likely to lead to even longer traffic jams than usual southbound during the summer vacations.
