The railroad line and the road to and from Zermatt VS remained closed on Saturday lunchtime. The operator of the railroad line estimated that Zermatt would be accessible by land again later on Saturday afternoon.

This was announced by the Matterhorn-Gotthard Railway at midday on Saturday. The continuous line between Visp and Täsch below Zermatt will have to remain closed until at least the end of next week. The flooding in the Vispa river has had a "massive" impact on the line in several places, meaning that major repair work is required.

The current focus is on being able to resume train services between Täsch and Zermatt as soon as possible. As soon as the road through the Mattertal valley can be reopened, Zermatt will be accessible again, the statement added.

Furthermore, according to the communiqué, the Gornergrat Railway (GGB) was suspended on Friday afternoon due to a debris flow. The Riffelbord protective gallery was affected by a mudslide underneath this gallery. The extent of the damage is not yet fully known. It can be assumed that operations will have to remain suspended until at least Tuesday.
